Fresh from his regeneration and having crashed the TARDIS into Amy's back garden, the Doctor is dressed in the torn and soiled remains of the Tenth Doctor's attire and is in the final stages of his regeneration, making him behave erratically, as he is 'still cooking'. Once inside Amy's house, the Doctor eats various foods, including fish fingers dipped in custard. At Amy's request, the Doctor investigates a crack in her wall that he discovers is a damaged point of time and space. As he attempts to make repairs, he is interrupted by the cloister bell from his damaged TARDIS, telling him to return before it vanishes into the time vortex. The Doctor promises Amy that he will return in '5 minutes', but due The TARDIS' erratic state, he does not reunite with Amy until 12 years later, when she is 19. In the intervening time, she has been to four psychiatrists as a result of her insistence on the reality of the "Raggedy Doctor" (and has bitten each of them due to their insistence that he is imaginary). After their reunion, in which Amy helps the Doctor save the earth from the Atraxi, The Doctor takes the newly repaired TARDIS on a trip to the moon and back to 'run her in'. While he is gone it is two years (for Amy; how long for the Doctor is not specified) before he returns for her, and invites her to travel with him. Amy makes the Doctor promise to bring her back the next morning but does not tell him why: the next day is to see her wed her long time boyfriend Rory Williams.

My flickr

Twitching at Eden

Popped down to the Eden Project the other day to take some photos of the birds with my Sigma 170-500 lens as I really haven't used it half as much as I should have done.

Click on the photograph for a larger version

I found a male and female chaffinch:

And a Dunnock:

So nothing too exotic! It is situated on the eastern flank of Bodmin Moor.

The Cheeswring is a natural geological formation, a rock outcrop of granite slabs formed by weathering. It gets its name because the piled slabs look like a "cheesewring", a press-like device that was used to make cheese.

A local legend about this rock formation is the result of a contest between a man and a giant. When Christianity had just been introduced to the British Islands, the giants who lived at the top of the mountains were not happy about it. The Saints had invaded their land and were declaring their wells as sacred.

One of the larger giants, Uther, was given the task of ridding their land of the Saints. He confronted the frail St Tue, who proposed a rock throwing contest. If Uther won, the Saints would leave Cornwall. If St. Tue won, then the giants would convert to Christianity.

Uther took his turn first and easily threw a small rock to the top of nearby Stowe's Hill. St Tue prayed for assistance, and picking up a huge slab found it was very light. One after the other, they threw their rocks, stacking them up in perfect piles. When the score was 12 stones each, Uther threw a thirteenth stone, but it rolled down the hill. St Tue picked up this fallen stone, and as he lifted it, an angel appeared to carry it to the top of the pile of rocks. Seeing this, Uther conceded and most of the giants decided to follow Christianity after that.

Thanks Wikipedia re-enactment group that do lots of fantastic charity work in and around Cornwall.

The shots were taken on the deck of the <a Three Musketeers.

The rain was lashing down, sadly, so the decks were covered and conditions very dark, so I tried to overcome this by bouncing my flash off the canvas I had thought for weeks about what I might do, but by the day the entries were due in, I still had nothing.

I didn't really want to walk into a shop and shove a camera in someones face and I wasn't even sure that would make a good shot in any case.

Then I heard that the Three Jays, a local fishing boat, was being launched (by hand, not wheels) down at Gorran Haven, a local Cornish fishing village. I didn't take much time to weigh up the options, as well, there were no options, so instead I grabbed my camera and headed off.

It was late morning, and the light was quite harsh, so I decided to use Photomatix to try and pull some detail out of the shadows and calm down the highlights. I was fairly pleased with the results over all.

There are more to come, but here is a taster:

Here is the one I entered for the competition - it came 2nd :)

(It's pretty much impossible to see them properly at this size - so for better, larger versions, click on the photograph and it will magically grow)

More to follow - watch this space :)

My flickr

Trains, Mills and Horses...

My first challenge was getting to grips with the lens, I wasn't used to things being so far away in the composition and I realised I had to step into the composition to get anything vaguely interesting. I was quite pleased with my results that day considering it was the first time I'd used it.

All of the photographs look a million times better larger, I promise.

The next time I took the lens out, I wasn't so lucky with the weather. Cold, damp and overcast, I wasn't sure if I was going to get anything at all! I headed up onto Bodmin Moor to another of my favourite places, Minions. Aside from the Cheesewring (which I didn't photograph that day as the light would have been terrible) there are a couple of stone circles called The Hurlers and numerous old abandoned Tin Mines.

I only took one strobe with me (I foolishly took one out to make room for the borrowed lens in addition to my other lenses - but since I only used the wide angle, I could have rearranged my camera bag if I'd have thought about it more) which presented some limitations due to the lack of natural light and me being a total novice in the world of off camera flash.

Still, I got the chance to have a go at balancing flash and natural light, so it's all part of the learning curve.

The Hurlers

Bodmin Moor : A Triptych

You can see Dartmoor in the background.

Visit my Flickr to see the large sizes and other photographs.

Swans, Grey Heron and Canada Goose

After a recent talk on natural history photographs at the local camera club, I felt inspired.
I headed off to Par Beach Pool (just behind Par Beach in Cornwall) to see what was there. I decided to focus on this as a source of wisdom, the wisdom of knowing where you came from, to construct a still life to photograph as my entry into the competition.

The photographs are of my two great grandfathers (although you can't really see at this size - click photographs for larger versions).

It was also around this time that I discovered my mums table was ultra reflective, and she also owns some quirky looking bits and bobs, so I thought I would take a few shots of this antique clock, and I quite liked the resulting reflections.

"Reflections of Time"

I found this little fella in my garden, sliding along the now dead (I'm still upset. This was the down side of the snow/frost) red banana plant. My macro lens (a Tamron) was blurring the background beautifully, but it was all a mass of browns, and I wanted more contrast, so I propped some coloured card behind him.

Here's a stalking little cat on a hot tin roof!

My Flickr

2009 - Winter - Snow, Frost, Graffiti and Kittens.

Click photographs for larger view

I was beginning to think it would never snow like it did when I was a kid - you know, enough to close your school and deep enough to build a snowman in - and then 2009 saw the return of some decent wintry weather.
It always makes me laugh how the most mundane things suddenly get photographed because they have a few inches of snow on them. Benches for example. Surely everyone at some point has taken a photograph of a bench covered in snow.
I was up in Shropshire staying with family, and the beautiful countryside a short walk away made it impossible not to grab my camera, pull on some fingerless gloves and go out and explore. It was the first time I had ventured out alone with a camera, and it's amazing how much more you take in when you aren't half focused on people around you.
Even graffiti on the railway bridge demanded my attention - normally it's just background noise.

As I walked off the bridge, I was totally smitten by the frost on leaves by the side of the railway. I took this shot, which has astonished me with its popularity on flickr - 220+ favourites and increasing daily!

I would love to show you the rest of the beautiful photographs I had taken that day... but I had a computer malfunction which resulted in the loss of all the other photographs I had taken that day. Including the bench photograph.
Frustration.
Even more annoyingly there was a thaw overnight, and I never got to retake the bench I had found, when it was all snowy and abandoned.
Not quite as atmospheric, but just as abandoned - here is my bench.

The thaw brought about some other photo opportunities though :

Not the convenient shove-in-your-handbag point and shoot I had used forever, but a shiny new Canon EOS 450d, complete with an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS kit lens, and a Tamron 70-300mm f4/5.6 DI LD Macro lens.

I had to take it out for a trial run, so headed up to Warrens wood at St Blazey to make the most of the Autumn colour scheme. I had a quick look at the manual, but with so much to take in, decided to dial it to manual and experiment with the settings in the hope that I might take a shot that I liked.

My macro lens still needed testing, and with the Autumn weather giving way to the chill of Winter, I felt some indoor practice was in order. Water seemed like a good place to start, so to the bemusement of those around me, I spent a weekend taking photographs of various combinations of water, oil and cds... as you do!

Flowers seemed like the logical progression, and since I was new to the world of macro, I headed outside to shoot the only flower still standing (in my defense - it was December by this point!)

What my back garden lacked, the supermarket provided, and I bought some flowers.
